The situation in Italy over the continued spread of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) is becoming grimmer and grimmer as the government with the oldest population in Europe is now struggling just to keep up with the dead.

As reported by the Sky News, Italians are dying at such high rates that the army has been called in to transport the bodies to crematoriums in long convoys of trucks:

The Italian city of Bergamo, one of the worst-hit by the coronavirus outbreak, is having to transport its dead out of the city as its crematorium is struggling to cope.

Army vehicles have been brought in to move dozens of coffins from Bergamo to other regions, according to Ansa news agency.

The wealthy city northeast of Milan, in the country’s Lombardy region, has logged at least 93 deaths from the coronavirus to date, but the casualty rate is climbing rapidly. In fact, the Sky News noted, there have been more COVID-19 deaths in Italy now than in China, where the virus originated.

As of Wednesday, 3,405 people had died in Italy, a steep rise of 427 in a single day.

No wonder the army is being called in.

Giorgia Gori, the mayor of Bergamo, told Sky News that the actual number of dead from coronavirus could even be higher because many people who suffered from COVID-19 symptoms actually died before they were tested.

Italy has put new measures into place in order to mitigate the spread of the virus — which has infected over 110,000 people globally — including placing the entire country on lockdown and shutting schools, museums, and other public places.

Elderly people throughout the country are stepping up precautions as the virus spreads disproportionately to the elderly, including Pope Francis who is 83. Last week, The Pope canceled public engagements because of a cold, though he ultimately tested negative for coronavirus.

At least 50 inmates escaped from an Italian prison between Sunday and Monday as tension over sweeping coronavirus restrictions triggered riots in 27 prisons across the country.

Six inmates died of a methadone overdose after breaking into an infirmary during the commotion, the Associated Press reported.

Italy is the hardest-hit country outside Asia and second only to China, where the novel coronavirus originated, in both confirmed infections and deaths. The number of infections crossed 9,000 on Monday, including 463 deaths.

The government has responded with a crackdown meant to limit the spread of COVID-19. On Monday, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte put the entire country on lockdown. Schools, museums, theaters, and swimming pools throughout the country are closed, and weddings and funerals have been suspended. Large public events have also been canceled, entire towns have been sealed off, and Italy’s popular tourist destinations are deserted.

‘You can’t leave, and you’re in a place where infectious diseases can spread critically’

Italy’s prisons were overrun by protests when news emerged that family visits were suspended or limited, according to the AP. Alessio Scandurra of the Antigone Association, which lobbies for prisoner rights, told the AP that prisoners were already feeling the stress of being packed into small, overcrowded spaces that put them at heightened risk of infection in an outbreak.

“In prisons in general, there’s a lot of anxiety,” he told the AP. “You can’t leave, and you’re in a place where infectious diseases can spread critically. Obviously inmates know this very well.”

In Modena, prisoners on Sunday took two guards hostage before swiping keys and trying to scale a fence to escape. They were thwarted by the riot police but had done enough damage to the prison that other inmates had to be relocated to temporary facilities, The Daily Beast reported.

It was also in Modena were six prisoners gained access to the prison infirmary, where they overdosed on meth, which Donato Capece, the secretary-general of the penitentiary police union, told the AP was used to treat opioid dependence.

Inmates at a Pavia jail set mattresses ablaze, forcing a part of the building to be evacuated, and others at Milan’s San Vittore prison attacked guards and climbed onto the roof in response to the city’s closing. Perched there, a group held up a painted sheet reading “Indulto,” which in Italian means “pardon,” the AP reported.

Inmates at the Rome-based Regina Coeli prison were heard shouting and clanging objects on the cell bars, The Daily Beast said. Outside, inmates’ relatives protested after learning that only one person could visit each prisoner, the AP reported.

A group also set fire to the city’s Rebibbia prison, allowing about 30 inmates to flee. Sirens pierced the air and helicopters hovered over the area, The Daily Beast said, adding that the prisoners had since been taken back into custody. There, too, relatives and prisoner advocates took to the streets and hung a banner on a police barricade declaring “Free them all.”

Capece, who said prisoners also ran away from jail in Foggia, accused the Italian government of turning its back on the prison system.

“The administration is completely absent,” he told the AP. “They have left the penitentiary police in jeopardy.”

Cases mounting in the U.S. as well

Now, the city — and the country — struggle to process the bodies in Medieval ways.

“The crematorium of Bergamo, working at full capacity, 24 hours a day, can cremate 25 dead,” a city spokesperson told Sky News.

“It is clear that it could not stand up to the numbers of the past few days,” hence the need to haul the bodies away in army trucks, the official noted.

Now, coffins are being transported to crematoriums in other cities including Modena, Acqui Terme, Domodossola, Parma, Piacenza, and others, Sky News reports. After the bodies are cremated, officials said the remains will be brought back to Bergamo.

Journalists with Reuters reported witnessing two funerals per hour over a period of six hours on Monday.

“Many of the deceased were unable to have funerals as the demand is too high, and instead they were taken to a chapel inside a church within the cemetery,” Sky News reported.

The British news agency notes further that coffins containing dead coronavirus victims have filled up a pair of hospital mortuaries and a cemetery morgue as well. And while relatives have been allowed to come in and pay their last respects, they can only gain access in small numbers and with the recommended amount of distance — six feet, according to the CDC — to prevent further spread of COVID-19.

The local newspaper’s obituary section, meanwhile, has expanded of late from 2-3 pages to 10 to accommodate all of the notices.

As of this writing, there are more than 14,000 diagnosed cases of coronavirus in the United States and 207 deaths, with 108 people having recovered. U.S. health officials say that the number of infected continues to double every 2.5-3 days, which is too fast, hence the reason for the mass closure of businesses like bars, restaurants, gyms and office buildings. The most cases, per state, are in New York, Washington, and California (1, 2, 3 respectively), according to World Meters. The fewest are in South Dakota, Alaska, and West Virginia (in order).

It should also be noted that according to the site — which keeps records in near-real-time — the vast majority of cases (at this point 13,416 out of 13,480 known) are only suffering from “mild” virus conditions.

Coronavirus (“Chinese virus”) kills the oldest and has no respect for authority
Many of the most powerful people in the world are old, and coronavirus does not discriminate based on social status. Deaths are now hitting at high levels (not of death but of status), which can change the political conflicts of our world:

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Have NOT Got The Memo Yet, “Pestilences” Has No Cure

The Coronavirus Was Most Certainly Produced by Crazy (Un-Godly) Men in Laboratories, WGO and CDC Knew All Along That the Coronavirus Was a Bioweapon, There’re in Charge?

If a mandatory vaccination program were to be implemented again in the U.S. for (“Chinese virus”) COVID-19, the government would have to reassure the public its previous negligence of such side effects would not be repeated, an unlikely scenario after the corporate breach of trust exposed on Wall Street in recent years involving large pharmaceutical firms. Regardless, Big Pharma is already partnering with the U.S. Army to develop a vaccine for the coronavirus which would have to be tested and evaluated before licensing by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended for use by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), both of which partner with the WHO whose largest financial contributor is the U.S. government.
