Proverbs14:12 says are the ways of death. Isaiah told Israel that their righteousness’ were as filthy rags in Isaiah64:6. Paul told them that know the law that they be joined with Christ when they are dead to the law. And that only when they are joined to Christ can they bring forth fruit unto God in Rom.7:4. There is a clue in this verse that will help us understand why God accepted Abel’s offering. But, not Cain’s. It also helps us to understand why in Rom.9 Paul says that God hated Esau but loved Jacob. It is because Cain and Esau represents the righteousness of works, and Abel and Jacob represents the righteousness of faith. Check it out. I am sure it will be a blessing to you. Paul also said that the law is not made for the righteous man in 1Tim.1:9. Are you seeing a pattern here?
The pattern we see in these verses is that the law was not given so that Israel would have the righteousness needed for eternal life by keeping it. By works. But, Isaiah said that kind of thinking is only filthy rags. Gal.3:21 says righteousness does not come by works because there was never a law given that could give life. And Gal.3:23-25 says the law was only given to Israel to be a schoolmaster to teach them how to live civilly together as a people until Christ came. This is why Jesus said “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”Mt.5:17-19.
When Jesus fulfilled the law and prophets as He said He would this fulfilled Jesus’ provision given in these verses so that the law could pass.
And since the law passed with Jesus’ death and resurrection, the law is not to be used as a means to lead them, or anyone else for that matter, to Christ. When Gal.3:23 says the law was their schoolmaster to bring them to Christ Paul is saying they would be under law till Christ came. Not that the law is to be used in witnessing to bring people to Christ.
So those who use it when witnessing as a means to show people how bad they are so that by trusting in Jesus they are made good enough for God to accept them, are doing so in rejection of Paul’s gospel. Because the law was given only to be a guard over Israel. A schoolmaster that taught them how to behave so they would not destroy each other. Not so men would see how bad they are so they will trust in Jesus’ goodness being imputed to them so they are righteous before God.
The law was meant only to keep them as a people so the Messiah could have a purely human bloodline through which to come. A bloodline that was never contaminated with the seed of the serpent as those that were destroyed in the flood had been. Showing that the reason God brought the flood was to save mankind. Not to destroy them because they were bad.
So when we read Gal.3:19 through the end of the chapter, Paul is not telling us how to use the law now when we witness to unbelievers to prove to them how bad God knows they are so they will turn from their bad behavior to trust in Jesus to make them good enough for God to accept them. That kind of righteousness does not lead to eternal life because that righteousness is a righteousness of works. It is the way that seemeth right unto a man that leads not to life, but to death as Proverbs14:12 told them. Paul was telling Israel that all that the law was meant to do for them was to show them how to live in a civil society. A society in which their foremost authority was to be the God that made them.
But, some Israelites made the law their means for righteousness. And by doing so they put the law between them and God. Putting their trust in the law instead of God. This made the law an idol for them. An idol that instead of joining them to God, actually served to do the opposite. This is why Paul wrote Rom.7 to them that know the law who were trusting in it instead of trusting in God for righteousness. So that they would realize that they had made the law an idol that stood between them and God. And turn from the sin that Paul said was “in my members” that was the Israelite’s idolatry of the law.
This is why when Jesus told them in John8 that if they did not believe that I Am they would die in their sin, they retorted that they were of the bloodline of Abraham “and were never in bondage to any man.” These were the very people Paul was speaking to also in Rom.7 who trusted in their lineage and law keeping for righteousness instead of trusting in God. And in doing so had made the law an idol. For which the only deliverance for them was to be dead to the law so they could be joined with Christ. And only then could they bring forth fruit unto God.
It is however because most Israelites did keep the law, whether out of idolatry or just obedience to God, their bloodline remained purely human. Unaffected by the seed of the serpent that was at enmity with the seed of the woman. Just as God said it would be in Gen.3:15. Therefore providing the means by which Jesus coming in the same flesh all men have, His death would then be a death that He could die on behalf of every man. Because unless Jesus was fully human His death could not be for those who are also fully human. So by joining with mankind in our flesh and blood He was able to join with mankind on our death. He was really and fully dying a man’s death on the cross. Because only by dying a man’s death could His resurrection from that death conquer death for all mankind who will trust in Him. This is what Heb.2:14,15 tells us.
So let’s remind ourselves again what is the reason God gave Israel the law. It was so that Israel would be preserved a pure people. A purely human bloodline the Messiah would come through that was untainted by the seed of the serpent.
Do we see the attempt at tainting the bloodline of humans today? Yes we do. It is the serpent’s desire to administer this tainted DNA to every person on earth that we are hearing daily from the so called health officials around the world. And is said to be for our benefit to ward of the ravages of a disease that has never even been proven to exist. This is the ultimate deception and attempt by satan to destroy flesh and blood humans from off the earth. The seed of the serpent truly is at enmity with the seed of the woman. He has never given up trying to corrupt her seed.
This will not be because all humans to die so that they disappear from off the earth that way. But, Jesus’ prophecy that if He had not returned no flesh would be saved will be fulfilled by the serpent mingling his seed with the seed of the woman. DNA mixing that makes men other than human. So that the seed of the serpent corrupts all human flesh until there is no purely human flesh left.
All of this was the reason God gave Israel the law. Because by keeping it blameless as most Israelites did as we see in Luke1:5,6 they kept the human bloodline pure from the seed of the serpent. And by doing this the way for Jesus to be purely human was kept. This is why Gal.3:19’s instruction for us is that the law’s expiration date was when “the seed should come to whom the promise was made”. The law given through Moses is not eternal. As it’s being a schoolmaster for Israel Paul clearly says ended with Christ.
And it is not the means by which we show people how bad they are to save them from that badness. Oh, we can use the law in this way if we want to. Deceptively convincing people to think that it is because they are bad that they need Jesus. But, if we do we are leading them in the way Proverbs says leads only to death. Because no one can be led to the saving grace of Christ by works of the law. Because that saving grace comes only by faith, not works.
Saving faith must be in the person Jesus and His resurrection. Not to be confused with His or anyone else’s works. Just as Christ’s faith justified Him. And made Him the unblemished and spotless lamb of God who taketh away the sin of the world. So Paul tells us that our justification is the same that justified Jesus. The faith of Christ was His and is our justification. For it is only when we trust in Him in the same way that Jesus trusted the Father, saying nevertheless not my will but thy will be done when He lived as a man, that we are justified with the justification that leads to eternal life.
All this reminds me of an old Kieth Green song that had these words. “Oh Lord you’re beautiful. Your face is all I see. And when your eyes are on this child. Your grace abounds to me. I want to take your word and shine it all around. But, just let me hear it Lord. And when I’m doing well help me to never seek a crown. For my reward is giving glory to you… Re place the lamp of my first love. That burns with holy fear.”
Our first love is Jesus. We must not allow ourselves to be distracted from our focus on Him. Not by works or any of the wrong understanding the world’s wisdom or experiences teaches. So much of this life does that, it’s difficult sometimes to stay focused. We must not be deceived to think the right way is the way of works. Because as Proverbs tells us, that thinking only leads to death. But, if we will keep our focus on Jesus God guarantees we will have the strength by His grace to make it through all of this life’s distractions. And we will come out on the other side receiving the inheritance of His eternal kingdom. Where there is only love, joy, and peace in the Holy Spirit.

Dear Jesus, thank you for joining with me in my flesh and blood so that you could join with me in death. Thank you that you rose from that death so that I could join with you in your life. I lay my life at your feet. Take my mortal life in exchange for your immortal life. Help me to live my life for you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
