Australia’s first H5N1 bird flu case was contracted by a kid who visited India last month, according to the WHO.
As of May 22, the health organization reported no close contacts in Australia or India had symptoms.
What’s next? It recommended the public to avoid live animal markets and farms but not to impede travel or trade due to this event.

The youngster who contracted Australia’s first “severe” bird flu case was likely exposed in India last month, according to the WHO.

Genetic sequencing confirmed the avian influenza virus was H5N1, a strain that circulates in South-East Asia and has been seen in poultry and humans, the WHO said Friday, local time.

“Although the source of exposure to the virus in this case is currently unknown, the exposure likely occurred in India, where the case had traveled, and where this clade of A(H5N1) viruses has been detected in birds in the past,” it said in a tweet.

The WHO said the two-year-old Victoria girl traveled to Kolkata, West Bengal, from February 12 to 19 and returned to Australia on March 1.

After two weeks in the hospital, Victoria’s health authorities said the boy made a “full recovery”. As of May 22, no close family contacts in Australia or India reported symptoms, according to WHO.

“Additional information provided by the family indicates that the case did not travel outside of Kolkata, India, and did not have any known exposure to sick persons or animals while in India.” What’s known about Australia’s avian flu?

Clare Looker, Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, said it was unclear how the infant caught H5N1, but humans normally contract it from poultry.

“So either visiting poultry farms or live wet markets, which have birds at them, or if they’ve had a lot of contact with domesticated birds,” he said. Sometimes people get it from touching sick bird meat or eggs. “We couldn’t identify a clear event that led to this child’s infection, but we suspect it’s one of those things.”

While difficult to perform months later, Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security infectious disease expert Amesh Adalja said an inquiry was needed to establish if the youngster came in contact with poultry or other birds.

“H5N1 viruses do not transmit efficiently between humans and I suspect there’s an occult animal exposure that led to the infection,” Adalja added.
WHO urges against travel restrictions The WHO claimed H5N1 can cause “severe disease” and “a high mortality rate” in humans.

The WHO detected 246 H5N1 infections in four western Pacific countries from 2003 to 2023. There were 138 deaths. “These A(H5N1) influenza viruses, belonging to different genetic groups, do not easily infect humans, and human-to-human transmission thus far appears unusual,” said WHO.

“As the virus continues to circulate in poultry, particularly in rural areas, the potential for further sporadic human cases remains.”The agency warned people to avoid live animal markets, farms, live poultry, and poultry dropping-contaminated surfaces.

“WHO advises against implementing travel or trade restrictions based on the current information available on this event,” stated. “WHO does not advise special traveler screening at points of entry or other restrictions due to the current situation of influenza viruses at the human-animal interface.”

It advised anyone who felt sick after being exposed to potentially infectious animals or contaminated environments to seek medical attention and limit exposure.
