The Bible speaks often of scorners, scoffers, and mockers. Those English words are often used interchangeably, especially in the book of Proverbs, as translations of the Hebrew word luts. A scorner is one who mocks the things of God and expresses his negative opinion of wisdom with derision, in order to involve others. Fools may think foolish thoughts, but scorners go a step further and blurt them out proudly. Scorners are unteachable because they refuse to listen (Proverbs 9:8; 13:1). Proverbs 15:12 says it can be a waste of time and effort to show a scorner the error of his ways.
The Bible gives several characteristics of scorners and warns us to avoid them and beware lest we become like them. Here are some biblical descriptions of scorners:
• Scorners may seek wisdom but cannot find it. One reason they cannot find wisdom is that they are already convinced of their own opinion. We cannot grow wise if we won’t learn from the wise (Proverbs 14:6).
• Scorners refuse to learn from rebukes or mistakes. They keep doing the same dumb things over and over again (Proverbs 13:1).
• Scorners are the source of strife and contention. When we get rid of the scornful, we have peace (Proverbs 22:10).
• Scorners resent correction. They cause trouble for those who try to show them truth (Proverbs 9:7; 15:12).
• Scorners are arrogant and haughty (Proverbs 21:24), which keeps them at odds with God because He “resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).
• Scorners don’t benefit from severe consequences, but others can learn from watching their downfall (Proverbs 19:25).
The Bible tells of a greater source of truth than human reasoning. The Left can’t handle that.
At PragerU, we have released about 400 videos on virtually every subject outside of the natural sciences and math. Along with 2 billion views, the videos have gotten tens of thousands of comments. So we have a pretty good handle on what people most love and most hate. For example, any video defending America or Israel inevitably receives many negative responses. But no videos elicit the amount of contempt and mockery that videos defending religion, explaining the Bible, or arguing for God do.
Obama Mocks & Attacks Jesus Christ And The Bible / Video / Obama Is Not A Christian
Obama Mocks and Attacks Jesus Christ And The Bible. A top U.S. evangelical leader is accusing Sen. Barack Obama of deliberately distorting the Bible and taking a “fruitcake interpretation” of the U.S. Constitution. In comments aired on his radio show, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson criticized the Democratic presidential nominee for comments he made in a June 2006 speech to the liberal Christian group Call to Renewal. In the speech, Obama suggested that it would be impractical to govern based solely on the word of the Bible, noting that some passages suggest slavery is permissible and eating shellfish is disgraceful. “Which passages of scripture should guide our public policy?” Obama asked in the speech.
“Should we go with Leviticus, which suggests slavery is OK and that eating shellfish is an abomination? Or we could go with Deuteronomy, which suggests stoning your child if he strays from the faith? Or should we just stick to the Sermon on the Mount? “So before we get carried away, let’s read our Bible now,” Obama said, to cheers. “Folks haven’t been reading their Bible.” He also called Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount “a passage that is so radical that it’s doubtful that our Defense Department would survive its application.” Dobson said Obama should not be referencing antiquated dietary codes and passages from the Old Testament that are no longer relevant to the teachings of the New Testament
. “I think he’s deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own world view, his own confused theology,” Dobson said, adding that Obama is “dragging biblical understanding through the gutter.” Dobson said the suggestion is an attempt to lead by the “lowest common denominator of morality.” “Am I required in a democracy to conform my efforts in the political arena to his bloody notion of what is right with regard to the lives of tiny babies?” he asked. “What he’s trying to say here is, unless everybody agrees, we have no right to fight for what we believe.” “What the senator is saying there, in essence, is that ‘I can’t seek to pass legislation, for example, that bans partial-birth abortion, because there are people in the culture who don’t see that as a moral issue,’ ” Dobson said. “And if I can’t get everyone to agree with me, than it is undemocratic to try to pass legislation that I find offensive to the Scripture.
Now, that is a fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution.” In a stunning display of ignorance- and in a speech you will NOT see in the mainstream media, because even they apparently understand how ignorant Obama was on the issue, Obama exposes his disdain for Christians, and exposes his disdain for the word of God, by taking the typical, petty, ignorant position, that the bible advocated slavery and the stoning of children, apparently implying that Christians should live their faith by reinstating customs that were obviously secular laws that were in place in a time long ago. Obama not so subtly implied that Christians are hypocrites because they dont agree to put themselves back under the laws of Moses that are no logner relevent to Christians today! The laws of Moses were a Jewish-only set of laws. Barack Obama claims he found the Lord, whatever that means to him, but his obvious contempt for Gods word exposes the fact that Christ is not the one in control of his heart. His speech was a blatant misrepresentation of Christianity, and it was a speech whos intent was to malign and denigrate Christians, and to denigrate this great nation of ours. Stoning children for blatant disrespect of parents and of God, was a Jewish-only commandment meant to purge evil from among Gods elected people. Nowhere in the bible does God command anyone other than His own elected people, the Jews, to purge evil in such a manner.
Barack Obama however is apparently too ignorant of biblical truth to realize this fact, and apparently he feels that he is big enough to call Gods commandments toward the Jews into question? Obama is also apparently too ignorant of Gods word to understand that Christians today are not under the law of Moses, and that many edicts in the bible were meant to tell the people that they needed to obey ALL laws, even the secular laws which included laws that allowed slaves, and that the Jews were not just bound to the laws that God instated, but also to the cultural laws at that time. Obama may not like that- because it completely refutes his petty attempt at maligning God, Gods word, Christians and htis great nation of ours. Obama may claim to be a Christian, and he may even succeed in fooling a couple of people, but to those who know better, we see very clearly that his words betray what he claims his heart stands for.
Psalm 1:1 gives an excellent description of a wise and discerning person—such a person avoids scorners. The KJV says it this way: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” In this verse we can see the progression from innocence to foolishness. It begins with simple acquaintance (“walk”) as we start to listen to the opinions of those who do not follow God. The downward shift continues as we hang around (“stand”) with people who are open and unapologetic about their sin. The result is that we then “sit in the seat” of those who openly mock truth and godliness. The Bible says we are “blessed” (happy) if we do not follow this progression of becoming more and more comfortable with scorners but instead delight in God’s Law (Psalm 1:2; 119:165).
Scorners in the Bible include the boys who mocked Elisha in 2 Kings 2:23; Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem in Nehemiah 2:19; and God’s enemies who mocked Ethan in Psalm 89:51. The scoffers of Judah rejected God’s prophets and ultimately brought judgment on the nation: “The Lord, the God of their ancestors, sent word to them through his messengers again and again, because he had pity on his people and on his dwelling place. But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy. He brought up against them the king of the Babylonians” (2 Chronicles 36:15–17).
We are seeing an increase of scorners in our world as established wisdom is now being rejected in favor of emotion and human opinion. Scorn has never had a wider audience. We are all vulnerable to becoming scorners if we do not stay grounded in the Word of God. We have the weapons we need to keep from “sitting in the seat of the scornful.” We must be sure that we are “destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). When we voluntarily subject every idea and opinion to the scrutiny of Scripture and the Holy Spirit, we can protect ourselves from the often seductive words of the scorner.
It is impossible to find anyone in the Bible who was a power for God who did not have enemies and was not hated.
Like Joseph and Daniel of the Old Testament who served secular kings, we are called to serve everyone and help them fulfill their divine destiny. Jesus made it clear that people who want to lead or be great must be the servants of all. Serving is the way of leadership in the kingdom.
Forcing our way onto the world is not great leadership. Some accuse us of doing this very thing because we speak up on moral issues. It is important that we speak up on issues, but it’s also equally important that we love everyone no matter their persuasions.
Someday Jesus will rule the world; in the meantime, we should just serve well and let our good works speak of our Father who loves everyone.
