The tribulation is a seven-year era in the future when God will complete His discipline of Israel and complete His judgment of the unbelieving world. The church, which is made up of all those who have placed their faith in the person and work of the Lord Jesus to deliver them from sin’s punishment, will not be present during the tribulation.
The rapture will occur when the church is plucked from the planet (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:51-53). The church is saved from the coming wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:9). The tribulation is referred to by various names throughout Scripture, including the Day of the Lord (Isaiah 2:12; 13:6-9; Joel 1:15; 2:1-31; 3:14; 1 Thessalonians 5:2); trouble or tribulation (Deuteronomy 4:30; Zephaniah 1:1); the great tribulation, which refers to the more intense second half of the seven-year period (Matthew 24:21); time or day of trouble (Daniel 12 (Jeremiah 30:7).
Understanding Daniel 9:24-27 is required to comprehend the reason and timing of the tribulation. This text refers to 70 weeks decreed against “your people.” Daniel’s people are the Jews, or the country of Israel, and Daniel 9:24 speaks of a time set aside by God “to terminate transgression, put an end to iniquity, atone for wickedness, bring in eternal righteousness, seal up vision and prophecy, and anoint the most holy.” All of these things will be fulfilled by “seventy sevens,” according to God. This is 490 years, or 70 sevens of years. (Some translations refer to years as 70 weeks.)
Another part of this passage in Daniel confirms this. Daniel is warned in verses 25 and 26 that the Messiah will be cut off after “seven and sixty-two sevens” (69 total), beginning with the decision to rebuild Jerusalem. In other words, the Messiah will be cut off 69 sevens of years (483 years) after the decree to restore Jerusalem. Biblical scholars agree that it took 483 years from the time of the decree to rebuild Jerusalem to the time of Jesus’ crucifixion. Most Christian scholars, regardless of their perspective on eschatology (future things/events), understand Daniel’s 70 sevens as described above.
With 483 years passing between the decree to rebuild Jerusalem and the crucifixion of the Messiah, there is only one seven-year period left to fulfill Daniel 9:24: “to finish transgression, put an end to sin, atone for wickedness, bring in everlasting righteousness, seal up vision and prophecy, and anoint the most holy.” This final seven-year era is known as the tribulation period, and it is when God completes his judgment on Israel for its sin.
Daniel 9:27 summarizes the seven-year tribulation period as follows: “For one’seven,’ he will confirm a promise with many.” He will put an end to sacrifice and offering in the middle of the’seven’. And he will erect an abomination that creates desolation on a wing of the temple until the end that is ordained is poured out on him.” This verse refers to the person Jesus refers to as the “abomination that creates devastation” (Matthew 24:15) and who is referred to as “the beast” in Revelation 13. According to Daniel 9:27, the beast will form a seven-year covenant, but in the middle of this week (3 1/2 years into the tribulation), he will violate the vow, putting an end to sacrifice. According to Revelation 13, the beast will install an image of himself in the temple and demand that the entire world worship him. According to Revelation 13:5, this will last 42 months, or 3 1/2 years. Since Daniel 9:27 says this would happen in the midst of the week and Revelation 13:5 says the beast will do this for 42 months, the overall length of time is 84 months, or seven years. Also also Daniel 7:25, where the “time, times, and half a time” (time=1 year; times=2 years; half a time=1/2 year; total of 3 1/2 years) also alludes to “great tribulation,” the final half of the seven-year tribulation period during which the beast will rule.
See Revelation 11:2-3, which speaks of 1260 days and 42 months, and Daniel 12:11-12, which speaks of 1290 days and 1335 days, for more information on the tribulation. There is a reference to the tribulation’s halfway these days. The extra days in Daniel 12 could refer to the period at the end for the judgment of the nations (Matthew 25:31-46) and the establishment of Christ’s millennial rule (Matthew 25:31-46). (Revelation 20:4-6).
In summary, the Tribulation is a seven-year era in the end times during which humanity’s corruption and wickedness will reach its apex, and God will judge accordingly.
