Convicted Child Molester,Walter Breen
First, modern society is increasingly accepting of behaviors that the Bible declares to be sinful, immoral, and unnatural. While there is an enormous difference between child molestation and sexual acts involving consenting adults, the fact that society accepts behavior such as homosexuality allows people to consider far worse perversions of what God intended sex to be. And that leads to another question: why is society increasingly tolerant of aberrant behavior?
Child molestation and other perversions are becoming increasingly accepted because society has, for the most part, rejected the Christian worldview. The conventional wisdom is that humanity is not created in the image of God. Rather, humanity is the result of billions of years of the random processes of evolution. God is not the objective standard of morality. Rather, God is supposedly the invention of weak-minded people who are unable to accept the fact that everything in this world is meaningless.
The daughter of famed science fiction author Marion Zimmer Bradley has written an autobiographical account revealing the horrors of growing up in a home raised by LGBT parents who repeatedly sexually abused her and her brothers.
“I have heard all the customary protestations. ‘Your parents were evil because they were evil, not because they were gay,’ but I disagree,” writes Moira Greyland in her new book, The Last Closet: The Dark Side of Avalon.
“The underlying problem is a philosophical one that is based on beliefs that are not only common to gay culture but to popular culture. And this is the central belief: All Sex is Always Right No Matter What,” she wrote.
“I had both biological parents in the home, but both refused to act like traditional parents,” writes Greyland. “I needed my father to protect me and to see me as a girl instead of refusing to protect me and seeing me as an amorphous nothing who competed with him for boys. I needed my mother to love me and hold me and comfort me instead of being a terrifying, angry dictator. Worse than that, I was expected to not want them to love me and protect me, or to act like normal parents. I was supposed to be happy that they were doing their own thing, no matter what they did to us.”
The Last Closet has been an Amazon bestseller for weeks as a Kindle e-book, and is scheduled to be published as a print book this month. Over one hundred readers have reviewed it, and virtually all have given it five stars.
The book recounts Greyland’s life with her mother, who was the author of The Mists of Avalon and many other famous works of science fiction and fantasy, and her father, Walter Breen, who was a world-renowned authority on numismatics. Both identified as “gay,” both abused drugs and were involved in occult practices, and both were pedophiles, Greyland says, a claim that has been confirmed by her only surviving brother.
The couple’s LGBT ideology was constantly imposed on the children by both parents. Greyland says that Zimmer Bradley expected her to take on masculine mannerisms and to become a lesbian, and was disappointed in her attraction to the opposite sex, accusing her of being a “breeder.” Greyland also had to hide from her parents her conversion to Christianity which would have been received with terrible derision.
Alarmingly, Greyland reveals that her parents’ sympathetic views of pedophilia and pederasty had been a public fact for decades, one known particularly among science fiction and fantasy fans who attended fan conferences. Science fiction fans documented Breen’s molestation of at least ten children by 1963, which had only resulted in his temporary exclusion from the largest science fiction fan convention, Worldcon, and was never reported to the police. Breen continued to attend conferences for many years afterward, baiting children he targeted with abuse with various science education gadgets that would attract their attention.
Greyland writes that Breen was an open member of the “North American Man-Boy Love Association,” and he saw his pederastic proclivities as a natural consequence of his homosexuality. He and Zimmer Bradley jointly published a journal on pederasty and pedophilia, The International Journal of Greek Love, in 1965 and 1966, and Zimmer wrote an article for it treating lesbian pedophilia in a positive manner.
As awareness grew of Breen’s molestation of children among Berkeley science fiction fans in 1963, a newsletter was published about the problem that came to be called the “Breendoggle,” which openly speculated that Zimmer Bradley was tolerant of Breen’s behavior. However, the truth about Zimmer Bradley’s own sexual abuse of her daughter did not come to light until 2014, when Greyland was asked about her parents’ connection to pedophilia by the blogger and science fiction writer Deirdre Saoirse Moen.
Greyland’s response, published in Moen’s blog, received heavy coverage by major media outlets worldwide, including The Washington Post, The Guardian, Die Welt, and Entertainment Weekly. Many fans and former acquaintances of Zimmer Bradley denounced her, and some even burned her books.
“The first time she molested me, I was three. The last time, I was twelve, and able to walk away,” wrote Moira Greyland of her mother.
“I put Walter in jail for molesting one boy. I had tried to intervene when I was 13 by telling Mother and [Zimmer Bradley’s girlfriend] Lisa, and they just moved him into his own apartment.”
“I had been living partially on couches since I was ten years old because of the out of control drugs, orgies, and constant flow of people in and out of our family ‘home.'”
The family’s secrets began to unravel in the late 1980s, when Moira, now an adult, personally saw her father sexually abusing a boy and reported him to the police. Her testimony ensured a second conviction after an earlier arrest and conviction in the 1950s. Soon after, police uncovered the previous conviction as well as other accusations of sexual molestation, and prosecutors were able to send Walter Breen to prison for the rest of his life. Breen never repented of his acts, and always defended them, treating himself as a victim of an ignorant and backward society. He died of cancer while in jail awaiting transfer to long-term imprisonment.
Zimmer Bradley and her lesbian partner Elisabeth Walters went on the record in ensuing civil litigation admitting to knowing about Breen’s proclivities, and ultimately agreed to pay a civil settlement to Breen’s victims. However, their fans remained generally unaware of Zimmer Bradley’s own acts of sexual abuse until Moira and her brother Patrick began to speak publicly about it in 2014.
The trauma suffered by Moira and Patrick was so great that both of them chose a new last name, “Greyland,” to repudiate their parents’ last names. The abuse was not only sexual, but also physical and psychological, and was so savage that both siblings continue to suffer from powerful symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Greyland says she has spoken to many others who were raised by LGBT parents and their stories are very similar to her own.
“Every single child of gay parents with whom I spoke had certain things in common,” she writes in The Last Closet. “Those with only same-sex parents in the home ached for their missing parent and longed for a real father, and nearly all of us had been sexualized far too young.” Source
Walter(DirtBag) Breen was a serial child molester. This fact was known to many but not all fans in the early 1960s. His actions and behavior with young children, at SF conventions in particular, were criminal. In 1954, he had been convicted of child molestation in Atlantic City and put on probation.
In 1963, there was actually debate in the Berkeley, California fan community over whether or not to permanently ban Breen from Worldcon. Part of the reason for the dispute had to do with controversy over whether conventions could or should ban anyone at all, for any reason. It is interesting to compare early 1960s (a relatively straitlaced time) attitudes on the part of some fans toward child sexual abuse to how it would be viewed today. The scandal is referred to by fans as “Boondoggle” or “Breendoggle”, and is documented in detail at the Breendoggle Wiki. More at WorldCons of the 1960s, chapter 8b; WebCite.
Breen was banned from Worldcon for 1964 (Pacificon II), and briefly blackballed from the Fantasy Amateur Press Association after allegations of further pedophilic acts surfaced. Nevertheless, many prominent fans of the era (including big-name fan John Boardman), perhaps unaware of Breen’s prior conviction, dismissed the allegations as hearsay and “character assassination,” and the scandal blew over.
In 1985, Breen began grooming the eight-year-old stepson of author Stephen Goldin, having met the child at a science fiction convention. He continued to molest him for five years. He was arrested for it in 1989, accepted a plea bargain and was put on probation. That same year, he met another boy at another convention and began molesting him. He was arrested for this on October 3, 1991. He was charged with eight felony counts of child molestation and was sentenced to ten years in prison, where he died in 1994.
Again, some prominent members of the numismatic community dismissed or minimized the seriousness of Breen’s actions, and did not think they warranted expulsion from the American Numismatic Association. He is still a controversial figure in the coin collecting world.
Some of his legal troubles are discussed in Darkover Newsletter.
In a discussion about the Ordo Templi Orientis lodge, ceremonial magick, and English occultist Aleister Crowley as a child molester, longtime fantasy/SF artist/editor/publisher Cat Yronwode revealed her experience with Breen as well as with other child molesters in Bay Area science fiction fandom:One of the very early members or co-founders of NAMBLA [ North American Man-Boy Love Association ] was Walter Breen. The former husband of the science fiction author Marion Zimmer Bradley, he was also an expect on early American numismatics, and the cause of the so-called “Breen Boondoggle” which ripped apart Bay Area science fiction fandom in the mid 1960s when he was caught sexually molesting a young girl and was barred from the World Science Fiction Convention in Oakland.
Around the same time, Breen stole rare first edition copies of Aleister Crowley books, magazines, and manuscripts from my parents’ antiquarian bookstore in Berkeley, including a first edition of “777” — and he was subsequently barred from entering most Bay Area rare book stores because he was a known book thief. (We had gotten the Crowley material when we purchased in its entirety the library of the deceased Mistress of the Lotus Lodge of Oakland, California, whose name i have forgotten, along with her ritual robes and tools, and so forth; she had been a friend of Crowley’s and he had sent her many items gratis, including a small, colourful catalogue of the 1940s exhibit of Frieda Harris’s original paintings for the Thoth deck at a London art gallery, which i kept for lo, these 35 years, until i presented it to Frater Nigris in celebration of our falling in love.) Walter Breen was eventually convicted of child sex abuse by testimony taken from parents in the local coin collecting community, not in fandom or the thelemite community, and he died in prison.
Another former NAMBLA member and close friend of Breen’s was the Bay Area science fiction fan and “free love” exponent Jefferson Poland, a.k.a Jefferson Fuck Poland, a.k.a. Jefferson Clitlick Poland. He too was convicted of child sex abuse and spent time in the slammer. He is now a registered sex offender, forbidden from consorting with children. No, i cannot personally vouch for the fact that every member of NAMBLA is a child sex abuser…but i knew both of those men personally — and they both were. Their cohort Sandy Cutrell — by which i mean all three were good friends — was also a member of Bay Area science fiction fandom in the 1960s. He may not have been a member of NAMBLA, but if not, probably only because his interest was the sexual abuse of *girl* children.
He admitted his entire sorry history to me in the mid-1980s, and explained that friends of his had barred him from their house because he gave their young daughter comic books as a bribe so that she would sit on his face. Needless to say, i did not take this confession lightly and i told him he was unwelcome in my house as well. My point: here i knew three Bay Area sex abusers in the 1960s, two convicted and one self-confessed, of whom all three were members of science fiction fandom, two were members of NAMBLA, and one was a self-professed Crowleyite. Am i going overboard here? Is it a coincidence that OTO has had problems with NAMBLA members (in the Bay Area?) per Bill H[eidrick, Kaballah scholar and former OTO treasurer]? Who knows?
Whatever Happened to NAMBLA?
Rumors of the death of the North American Man Boy Love Association are only slightly exaggerated, our investigation found.
“It will likely be DECADES before this society can have an honest, non-hysterical conversation about kids and sex,” a pedophilia advocate who calls himself Eric Tazelaar told me earlier this month over Twitter direct message. Tazelaar claims to be a steering committee member of the North American Man-Boy Love Association, or NAMBLA, and is concerned about the organization’s future.
His fears aren’t unfounded. NAMBLA, once a visible advocate of pedophilia, doesn’t feature heavily into what I call the online pedo-sphere these days. Membership numbers and group activities are difficult to pin down, but based on online research and conversations with alleged former members as well as opponents of the group, both appear to have dwindled to nearly nothing.
“There are only a handful of people ostensibly still involved,” a self-described former NAMBLA member who called himself “Icarus” told me on the anonymous pedophile chat site Boychat.org.
Some pedophiles now call themselves “minor-attracted persons” (MAPs). MAPs have their own language in the pedo-sphere, which is divided into the “boylove,” sometimes abbreviated “BL,” and “girl love” communities. According to some “anti-contact” MAPs—the ones who claim they would never try and have sex with minors, and say they’re devoted to a lifelong struggle against their own urges—NAMBLA would be considered a “pro-contact” group.
Reformed pro-contacter Todd Nickerson, a member of the online group Virtuous Pedophiles or “VirPed,” has ventured out into the light of day, using his real name as the byline on stories he writes about his struggle not to offend. Nickerson, who dabbled in sympathy for NAMBLA before his conversion to the ways of anti-contact, says prominent pro-contacters are cult leaders. “They are the scary ones because they are fully invested in the message. They are smart and charismatic, and a lot of what they say is true, but they take it too far,” Nickerson told me in an email.
“I despise what they represent, and what they want to do,” said another member of Virtuous Pedophiles who goes by the pseudonym Brett Matthews. He said NAMBLA members “try to spin it so that they’re fighting for children’s rights,” but adds, “I’ve never seen children taking to the streets with signs demanding their right to have sex with pedophiles.”ADVERTISEMENT
Pedophiles who offend are as deeply loathed as ever. Last month, Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane referred to a newly unearthed sex abuse cover-up in the local Catholic diocese as “heinous.” That was one day after the movie Spotlight—the story of Boston Globe journalists uncovering a similar sex abuse scandal—won the Oscar for best picture. It’s safe to say that America, like most countries, despises adults who have sex with kids.
That’s not to say there’s been a time in recent memory when the public viewed pedophiles more favorably than, say, a smelly puddle of liquid on a bus bench. But NAMBLA was extraordinary for bucking the image of pedophiles as secretive creepers in vans. At its inception in 1978, NAMBLA’s pie-in-the-sky goals were visibility and social acceptance.
NAMBLA membership meant the ability to socialize with other members at activist events, and a subscription to the NAMBLA newsletter. NAMBLA’s original political causes were the total abolition of any legal age of consent, and the release of child molesters from prison. As an advocacy group, NAMBLA sought to turn sex between men and boys of literally all ages into a civil rights issue, get pederasts to come out of the closet, and show North America that boy-lovers are people too. Kids, says NAMBLA, should be able to decide when and with whom they have sex.
“There was a brief time, mostly in the 1970s, when some ordinary people of good will wanted to extend the sexual revolution to kids. But obviously it was never popular with any significant number of kids,” according to a Virtuous Pedophiles member who goes by the pseudonym Ethan Edwards.ADVERTISEMENT
And in its heyday, NAMBLA membership held a certain temptation even for pedophiles who say they truly wanted to avoid sex with kids. In the early 90s, when Brett Matthews was in his late teens and found NAMBLA, he thought it was a support group for pedophiles. “I had never spoken to another pedophile before, and when you’re alone in something, human nature is to reach out to people who are like you in some way, so you won’t feel so alone anymore.” Matthews checked to see if they had a hotline, and in the process, he learned that they were devoted to legalizing sex with children. “I can’t put enough distance between me and these guys,” he remembers thinking.
Most likely, the beginning of the end for NAMBLA was the notorious 1993 documentary Chicken Hawk: Men Who Love Boys, a film in which several NAMBLA members put their names, faces, and feelings out into the world for all to see. It was a bold move, and one that definitely didn’t pan out.
The film is a glimpse into the lives of some of NAMBLA’s most prominent boy-lovers, including Leyland Stevenson, who shares his longing for boy flesh, and gives a play-by-play of one of his sexual conquests in florid detail. NAMBLA members received some sympathy in the reviews for the film, but on the whole, most viewers felt that the just-let-them-talk filmmaking approach simply gave a bunch of criminals enough rope to hang themselves.
At the time, NAMBLA hung around in the outer orbit of LGBT rights groups. But NAMBLA’s sudden notoriety drew attention—and disgust—that such groups definitely didn’t want. The International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) faced a firestorm of criticism in 1993 when it took on its prestigious role of speaking at the UN on behalf of LGBT groups all over the world. Right-wing groups slammed it for its connection to NAMBLA, and the ILGA cut its ties with the group.ADVERTISEMENT
Consequently, “activism dried up,” Icarus told me.
NAMBLA’s exile from the greater LGBT community stung, according to Nickerson. He told me he was coming of age around that time, and that while he was attracted to young girls, he briefly befriended NAMBLA members online. “The LGBT community [used] to accept pedophiles, as a sort of red-headed stepchild,” he told me. But their perception is that after 1994, NAMBLA felt that the gays “threw pedophiles, including NAMBLA, under the bus when they started to gain some respectability.”
Without activism, NAMBLA was mainly just a newsletter, something Icarus feels was “a good source of information and camaraderie.” But around that time, he said, “members left for various internet boards where they could be mostly anonymous, compared to being in NAMBLA, where you’d have to pay annual dues and submit your real address to get the newsletter.”
“Pro-pedophile groups organized themselves online under different names,” said, Xavier Von Erck, director of operations at the anti-pedophile organization Perverted-Justice. These included DanPedo, BoyChat, and Annabelleigh, Von Erck told me in an email. “Those lightly organized groups—mostly communicating online—have been the largest draw.”
The newsletter’s prominence also became a liability. In 1995, legendary political comedian Barry Crimmins, who was also a childhood rape victim, made use of the NAMBLA newsletter in his successful effort to shine a spotlight on solicitation of minors in America Online chat rooms. “Back in ’95, you had to go find their print stuff,” Crimmins told VICE. The literature, he explained, helped him understand what pedophiles were up to in chat rooms. “Watching them in these rooms exchange rationales,” he said, “they fortified one another with this kind of stuff, and NAMBLA’s sort of the official version of that.”
“They would be comical if they weren’t so dangerous and horrible,” Crimmins said.
But over the past two decades, the group did become a punch line. Most millennials who have heard of NAMBLA only have “that one episode of South Park” as a reference point. The episode from 2000 was called “Cartman joins NAMBLA,” and the title refers to a hilarious mixup between the real NAMBLA and another “NAMBLA,” the North American Marlon Brando Look-Alikes.
But by the time that episode aired, the group was beginning to seem as fictional as the show’s group of Marlon Brando fans. In 2001, Boston Magazine called NAMBLA “close to extinction.” By the mid 2000s, The Daily Show had begun using NAMBLA as a kind of insta-joke, where “NAMBLA” was thrown out any time an innocuous-sounding acronym was needed to fill a gap, and the joke was on anyone who didn’t know what it stood for.
But NAMBLA is still hanging in there, according to Tazelaar. “It still exists, but greatly diminished in its numbers,” he wrote. “This is due to law enforcement entrapments that spooked everyone a number of years ago.”
“One such entrapment was the FBI’s promise of a trip to Mexico,” he said. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, that bust put seven NAMBLA members behind bars, including a national leader and an event organizer.
According to William Percy, a historian and pederasty advocate who told me he has never been in NAMBLA, those arrests were “the final blow” for the organization. (The FBI declined a request for comment about NAMBLA.)ADVERTISEMENT
That left NAMBLA hobbled. Today they do pretty much nothing. “We do not answer questions about our membership numbers. We no longer publish printed newsletters, the Bulletin, etc.,” Tazelaar told me.
The site doesn’t offer much else. The contact page offers a mailing address and two phone numbers, one of which appears to have been disconnected, while the other leads to the voicemail of a seemingly unrelated business. There’s also an email address belonging to someone named Arnold Schoen who has answered media requests as recently as 2010. But my emails to Mr. Schoen went unanswered.
However, Tazelaar says that doesn’t mean NAMBLA is dead. “We still have a number of members who diligently pay dues, primarily to help us to maintain a repository on the web of NAMBLA’s current as well as historical positions to which we adhere.”
According to Von Erck, his group of internet activists have lost interest in NAMBLA. “We shuttered our spin-off that was dedicated to exposing pedophile activists some years ago after a nice string of exposures, arrests, and convictions,” he told me.
Even Percy, who said he wishes at least some pederasty was legal, didn’t seem dismayed about the decline of NAMBLA. “They were all crazy,” he told me, adding, “I always thought they should advocate an age of consent for sex at 14.” He went on to say that NAMBLA “did a bad thing, because by demanding no age of consent, they facilitated the raising of the age of consent.”
Another anonymous Boychat commenter named Observer also seemed to have soured on NAMBLA in retrospect. In response to my question, he wrote a kind of wistful prose poem: “One hundred years from now… how will history look back at NAMBLA? Did it help in bringing [boylove] to the public attention?” he asked. “I suspect some will feel that NAMBLA was a net negative.”
Whether or not we’re talking about NAMBLA, “boylove” hasn’t died. “The ideology that they pushed is very much still, alive, and is pretty much everywhere,” Matthews told me, and he says they don’t listen to reason. “I’ve argued with these people for twenty years. I’ve gotten to the point where I know I’m just beating my head against the wall.” Source
There is also the possibility of demon possession as an explanation in some cases. Perhaps a sin so evil and twisted could only come from the minds of the most evil creatures, Satan and his horde of demons. Satan knows the damage that—apart from the miraculous healing of God—molestation does to a child. If Satan can destroy someone’s life during childhood, there is simply less work for him and his demons to do later. Satan desires to “devour” (1 Peter 5:8) and “steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10). What better way than by attacking the most vulnerable and impressionable of people?
The rejection of the Christian worldview and the acceptance of a secular, naturalistic worldview leaves us with no absolute standard by which to declare child molestation to be evil. For generations, we have told people they are nothing but animals, so we should not be surprised if they begin to act like animals. If there is no absolute moral standard, then the “boundaries” people push are imaginary ones. Ultimately, child molestation is a result of people denying God and living their lives however they want.
The Bible speaks of godless individuals who “suppress the truth,” saying, “Although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. . . . Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie. . . . Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. . . . They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil . . . they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them” (Romans 1:18-32). It is impossible to find anyone in the Bible who was a power for God who did not have enemies and was not hated.
“Pedophile priests” have reverberated throughout America. But beneath our anger and revulsion, a fundamental question pulsates: Are those who abuse their positions of trust to prey upon children—a category certainly not limited to those in religious orders—sick … or are they evil? We need the answer to that fundamental question. Because, without the truth, we cannot act. And until we act, nothing will change.
My job is protecting children. It has taken me from big cities to rural outposts, from ghettos to penthouses, and from courtrooms to genocidal battlefields. But whatever the venue, the truth remains constant: Some humans intentionally hurt children. They commit unspeakable acts—for their pleasure, their profit, or both.
