According to one of the former US officials in charge of the COVID-19 response under the Trump administration, COVID-19 immunizations are not likely to protect against infection.

"I knew these immunizations wouldn't protect against illness." And I believe we overused immunizations. "And that made folks worried that it wasn't going to protect against serious sickness and hospitalization," Deborah Birx, former President Donald Trump's White House COVID-19 response coordinator, said on Fox News.

Many health professionals, notably Birx, pushed the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines, which were given emergency use authorization in late 2020 to prevent symptomatic COVID-19.

Protection against hospitalization dropped from 57% to 24%. A booster enhanced protection, but it rapidly degraded to subpar levels.

Fauci, together with Birx, helped led the United States' pandemic response and once said that vaccinated individuals would not become ill.
