THESE LAST DAYS- John16:7-11

By Edward O’Hara

Are we living in the last days? Most Christian’s would say yes we are. While pointing to “signs” they say are indicative of the last days described by the prophets and apostles.

But, didn’t the apostles teach that they were in the last days? Saying things like God “In these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.” So since we also believe that we are in the last days. This would seem to indicate that the last days are a period of time that stretches over many centuries. A long time as man looks at time.

So to be clear, the last days is the time that began with Acts and ends with Revelation. The time from the first infilling of the Holy Spirit in men till now. And all time that went before this was preparation for these last days.

A time when men would be made spiritual beings by a new birth. The creation of a spirit in him that was never available to anyone before these last days. Days marked by how God is able to speak to men on the inside. Rather than only through prophets and instructions written in stone.

So the last days are more than just a harbinger of end time events that are symbolized by men who have become “lovers of self rather than lovers of God.” And those who will not hear sound doctrine. As Paul described them to Timothy.

It is a time when spiritual men are now able to know the God who made them in an intimate and personal way that was not possible before these last days.

A time Paul spoke of saying, “Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel”. Eph.3:4-6

And Jesus spoke of saying, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” John3:5-7

So it is this creation of a spirit in the believer in Jesus that separates this dispensation, these last days, from all of what went before regarding man’s communications with their Creator.

It is this creation of a spirit in men in this dispensation that Jesus was referring to in John16 when He said, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”

These last days are the times Jesus and the apostles spoke of that speaks of our relationship with God and the events that would transpire during this time and directly following.

Which is why John’s letter of Revelation was written of the apocalyptic. Which is the revealing or unveiling of Jesus. Speaking of how after the fulness of the gentiles has come in that Paul spoke of in Rom.11:25,26. God would finish His work with ethnic Israel to unveil Jesus to them.

Paul refers to the time directly following this dispensation saying in Rom.11, “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the father’s sakes.

29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.”

This shows us the plan of God that brings to an end Israel’s slavery to sin under the law that kept them “shut up unto the faith”. For in these final 3 1/2 years of great tribulation God will bring Israel to her knees(Zech.12:10) before Jesus when He returns.

A time Daniel says, “for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” A pouring out that Jeremiah called “the time of Jacob’s trouble”. A time that in vs.7 of ch.30 Jeremiah adds that Jacob shall be saved out of it. Which correlates with what Paul says in Rom.11 saying that “all Israel shall be saved”.

Knowing that Paul’s statement that “all Israel shall be saved” speaks of all Israel that will believe in Jesus. So that just as in Rom.3:23 and Rom.5:12 and 18, and Isaiah53:6 when the word “all” is used it is qualified by believing or not believing. It too is speaking of those who will believe. Just as John3:16 clearly says.

So while God’s love is toward all men. Meaning every man who has evert lived. His salvation is made available to those who by their own free will will choose to accept His gift of eternal life by faith in Jesus.

So when we read of the last days in scripture we need to see why sometimes it seems to be referring to the great tribulation that comes just before the return of Jesus. And at other times to the time of the apostles.

It is because the last days is a reference to all the time between the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Acts. And the return of the Lord spoken of in Revelation.

So when you read about the last days you will know that we have been in them for almost 2,000 years. The times of the gentiles being the overwhelming majority of this time. With a very short time yet to be fulfilled after “the fulness of the gentiles has come in” at the very end when God will finish His dealings with Israel that Daniel9:24-27 and others speak of.

A time after the restrainer(God’s ministers of reconciliation- that’s us who are saved) has been taken out of the way. So that a return to the Old Covenant system where men who were not spiritual, but only natural, would follow God by their obedience to the law, adherence to the prophets, and their faith in Jesus. Just as it was when Jesus walked and taught in Israel.

So when we read Paul’s teaching saying, “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come”, we know it is a reference to the times he lived in till now. And not just the few years just before Jesus’ return.

So since the times of the apostles there have been the “men [who] shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

The only difference may be in the fact that these kinds of men have become progressively worse as the time of Jesus’ return draws nearer. And as the last days are nearing their end. As prophecy says they would.

If you really think about it from this perspective it’s easy to see that a major cause for this is the deception that started when Augustine brought to the Roman Catholic Church the gnostic pagan doctrine of original sin and sin nature.

Because by this deception the spirit of antichrist that John spoke of has caused many who call themselves Christian to join themselves to a different Jesus. So that those who would have been privileged with the ministry of reconciliation that currently restrains evil in the earth. Have need of being reconciled themselves.

This is proof that the perilous times Paul spoke of have been here since Constantine took over the reigns of power in the Roman Empire. Emboldened when Augustine became the Roman Catholic religion’s doctor of theology a little over 200 years after Paul wrote this. Continuing through the so called Protestant reformation when men like Martin Luther, an Augustinian monk, and John Calvin through his ill conceived T.U.L.I.P., furthered the deception that is the Roman religion of the harlot of Rev.17.

This is why Paul adds in 2Tim.3 that “evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” Telling Timothy, as should be instructive for all those who trust in the Biblical Jesus, and not the one Roman Catholicism teaches,

“14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

So in these last days, just as it was for those who lived earlier in these last days, it is of utmost importance that we follow Paul’s instructions to continue in the things which we have learned. Things that speak of God’s love for us. And our need for Him to make us to be people who will have heaven for our eternal home.

People whose love for God causes us to dwell on things that are “true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.” Phil.4:8,9

That this happens for those who trust in Him and His resurrection. For those who know and believe that Jesus came in the same flesh all men have. Because it was only by joining with us in our mortality that He made it possible for us to join with Him in immortality through faith in Him.

Made possible first by our being born again. Because that is when God creates a spirit in us that joins us to Him for eternity. The first fruits that is the believer’s guarantee that he will inherit the kingdom of heaven.

A kingdom Jesus said can only be seen by those who are born of the Spirit of God through faith in Him. A kingdom Paul said we inherit if we will confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus. And believe in our hearts that He has raised from the dead. In these last days this is how a man is made a spiritual being and saved from death to life.

We don’t know when our last day will be. No matter how close we are to the last of the last days of scripture. So the time is now for us to join with Jesus to become spiritual brothers. Don’t wait till it’s too late. Till your last days here on earth have come and gone. Trust in Jesus for eternal life now as Ps.118:24 reminds us, “This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.”

If you will do this then you will be a child of God. And as a child of God you are then heir to His kingdom. If you will do this… then I will see you there or in the air!
