On March 15, the health department discreetly made the update on its data tracker website.
“After correcting a coding logic problem, data on deaths were corrected.” This resulted in lower mortality rates across all demographic groups, according to the CDC’s website.
The CDC depends on states and other jurisdictions to record COVID-19 fatalities, and its website notes that the data is incomplete.
However, the numbers are often mentioned by physicians and others when advocating for COVID-19 immunization, including those who feel that almost all children should be vaccinated. The CDC’s director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, referenced the tracker’s fatality total in November 2021 while pressing for an expert panel to advise her organization to promote immunization for all children aged 5 to 11 years.
According to Kelley Krohnert, a Georgia resident who has been watching the developments, the CDC previously classified 1,755 children as dying from COVID-19, along with nearly 851,000 others.
The CDC reduced 416 fatalities among children and over 71,000 deaths elsewhere in the report, bringing the total to slightly under 780,000.
The agency refused to respond before the deadline.
The CDC previously revised their mortality figure in August 2021 “after the discovery of a data issue.”
“The update is an improvement, but it is at least the third revision to this data, and it still does not resolve the problem.” “It merely shows that people have been utilizing a poor source of data when addressing kids and COVID,” Krohnert said in an email to The Epoch Times.
Some journalists and clinicians have used the tracker data, but others have used a tally handled by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), which has been deemed as more credible by the agency.
The NCHS total, taken from death certificates, now includes 921 COVID-19-related fatalities among children and about 966,000 COVID-19-related deaths among all age groups.
The fatalities in the total include individuals who died from COVID-19 as well as those who died from COVID-19, according to an email from a CDC spokeswoman to The Epoch Times in January. COVID-19 was indicated as the underlying cause, or the principal cause of death, on almost 90% of death certificates at the time.

Some of the CDC-reported fatalities seem to be unconnected to COVID-19. According to an Epoch Times assessment of the death codes, numerous fatalities have drowning as a cause of death; while others have a pistol discharge as a cause of death.
For the time being, Dr. Alasdair Munro, a clinical research fellow for pediatric infectious diseases at University Hospital Southampton, praised the tracker update as “excellent news,” given that roughly a quarter of the pediatric COVID-19 fatalities had disappeared.
However, Munro, posting on social media, said it was “somewhat concerning that this data was being extensively exploited in the US to inform or argue for policy.”
Other individuals have urged for the CDC to offer a public apology or, at the very least, to publicize such adjustments, similar to how some lower-level organizations have made it plain that their death tolls have been reduced.
“It’s awful to silently footnote such a major blunder,” Jessica Adams, a former Food and Drug Administration regulatory review officer, remarked on Twitter.
However, a previous CDC spokeswoman said that the figures are approximated and subject to change on the CDC website.
“There is a great deal of complexity involved in all systems that attempt to track and summarize illness and death data, including differences in how data are collected and reported, completeness and accuracy of data, how timely data is entered into data collection systems and reported to CDC, and in the assumptions made and procedures used to determine whether COVID-19 was the primary cause of death, a contributing cause of death, or not likely a contributing factor in someone’s death.”
“It is therefore not unexpected that modifications or updates occur, including as a consequence of coding-related concerns (e.g., understanding that a better method to input, analyze, and/or interpret the data exists when additional instances and information are supplied).”
Given the caveats, Nowak said he wasn’t surprised the CDC didn’t disclose the change, claiming that statements by federal agencies “are best kept for events or changes that have or may have a substantial influence on government recommendations or policies.”
