According to a recent research, the protection against serious sickness provided by so-called natural immunity is still greater than that provided by COVID-19 vaccinations.

Researchers in Qatar discovered that those who survived COVID-19 illness but were not vaccinated had very strong protection against severe or fatal COVID-19.

“Effectiveness of initial infection against severe, critical, or fatal COVID-19 reinfection was 97.3 percent… regardless of original infection or reinfection variety, and there was no sign of fading.” After researching long-term natural immunity in unvaccinated adults, Dr. Laith Abu-Raddad of Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar and colleagues discovered “similar findings in sub-group analysis for those 50 years of age.”

According to previous research and real-world data, that proportion is larger than the protection provided by COVID-19 vaccinations.

In May, Swedish researchers discovered that two doses of a vaccination were only 54% effective against the Omicron strain of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, which causes COVID-19.

Meanwhile, South African researchers discovered that the efficiency of the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccinations peaked at 88 percent and rapidly plummeted to 70 percent or below.

Few researchers have investigated long-term natural immunity in unvaccinated individuals, in part because many of the participants later got a COVID-19 vaccination.

Meanwhile, vaccination effectiveness against infection and serious sickness has diminished with time, prompting recommendations for booster doses, with some Americans receiving five shots within 10 months.
Natural Immunity Is Ineffective Against Omicron Reinfection

Previously, the vaccinations were thought to give about 100 percent protection against symptomatic illness. Following the development of Omicron, they currently give less than 50% protection against infection over a short period of time, even after booster doses.

This strain and its subvariants are prevalent in several nations, including the United States and Qatar.

Natural immunity was supposed to provide considerable resistance to reinfection. However, the Qatari researchers discovered that it offers little protection against Omicron reinfection.

According to the research, pre-Omicron primary infection versus pre-Omicron reinfection was as high as 90.5 percent and stayed around 70 percent by the 16th month. However, pre-Omicron primary infection was only 38% effective against Omicron reinfection, however it was greater in persons infected with the original Wuhan strain or the Delta variation and lower in people infected with the Alpha or Beta strains.

Modeling predicted a reduction to 0 percent protection after 18 months, but the shielding seems to continue longer than anticipated, according to the researchers.

“Vaccine protection against Omicron subvariants lasts 6 months, while pre-Omicron natural immunity… may last a little more than a year,” they noted.

The study’s limitations were disparities in testing frequency across the cohorts analyzed, as well as the depletion of the groups with a COVID-19 infection owing to their deaths.
