There seems to be some confusion among some who say they believe the Bible, about what covenant Jesus preached. They seem to think that the message Jesus preached is a message for New Covenant believers. And that to be a New Covenant believer we must follow the teachings of Christ that He taught while He lived as a man on earth.

I wonder sometimes if they must think that Malachi is the end of the Old Covenant and Mathew is the beginning of the New just because their Bible’s are printed with a division there. It’s not you know. There are even some that seem to think that when Jesus said the law and the prophets were until John He meant that He was now going to preach a different message from the one that was taught to Israel in the Old Covenant. And still others like Hebrew Roots adherents that have written Paul’s teaching off altogether as heresy because his teaching is so radically different from what Jesus taught. Why I don’t know. Because the scripture is very clear on this so there should be no confusion. If one would just believe what the Bible plainly says. But, sadly most leave it to others to interpret the scriptures for them. Then they go out and preach that message instead of what the Bible plainly says. So let’s look at the scriptures together so we can all see for ourselves what the word of God says about this.

Covenants and Dispensations (Part 7)

First, Jesus was not wrong when He taught the Old Covenant to Israel. The Bible clearly says He came for the lost sheep of the house of Israel(Mt.15:24) to confirm that covenant with them(Gal.3:17). And Paul was not wrong when he taught the New Covenant to the church. Because the Bible clearly says the New Covenant Paul was sent to preach is “the mystery that was hidden from all ages past”(Eph.3:1-12). The reason for all the confusion is that so many are trying to live in both covenants at the same time. Because they really don’t believe that the Old Covenant ended and the New Covenant began, with Jesus’ death. But, it most certainly did.

In Gal.4:4 Paul tells us that Jesus was a man born under the law. Now I ask you, is a man born under the law whose whole life was lived under the law until He died going to teach something else? And Gal.3:17 tells us Jesus confirmed the covenant with Israel that God made with them through Abraham and Moses. The promise and the law. I ask you, is a man that came to confirm the Old Covenant with Israel going to teach something else? In Mt.15:24 Jesus tells us that He came only for the lost sheep of the house of Israel. A people who were under the law. I ask you, is a man that came to preach only to those who are under the law about the law to confirm the Old Covenant, going to preach something else? And in Mt.5:17,18 Jesus said He did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill the law. So that’s exactly what He taught and did, right? Now I ask you again, is Jesus going to preach something other than the covenant that He was not abolished, but was only here to fulfill? The answer to these questions is a resounding NO.

Discipling Ministry — Shepherd of the Mountains | disciples walk together in faith making disciples

So for those who say there is a “law of Christ” that Jesus preached that is different from what we see being taught all through the Old Covenant, it becomes painfully obvious that they have misunderstood what Jesus clearly said He was teaching, and for whom His teaching was intended. Because to confirm the covenant as Paul said He came to do He had to live it and preach it. This was the Old Covenant. A covenant with two parts described here by Paul;
“And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.”Gal.3:17. A covenant of works + faith whose expiration Heb.9:15 says was Jesus’ death. Because Heb.9:15 says His death is when the New Covenant came to power and the Old Covenant passed away.

Under the Old Covenant Israel was required by God to keep the commandments of Moses and the circumcision of Abraham for eternal life. This is the covenant Jesus confirmed by preaching it and fulfilling it. A great example of this was when Jesus spoke to the rich young ruler. He answered the rich young ruler concerning how he could have eternal life in Mt.19:16-21 saying that to have eternal life in the Old Covenant, the covenant he and Jesus were both in, he must keep the commandments and follow Him. Abraham and Moses are what make up the Old Covenant. And these taught the Israelites what were the requirements for eternal life. This is why the first 3 commandments in the 10 commandments told Israel they must believe in God. And the last 7 dealt with behaviors they must not do. So we see believing and works are right there together in the 10 commandments. And the fact that in the New Covenant salvation is by grace through faith without works shows that the 10 commandments and all the rest of the law were “done away” when the New Covenant came to power.

Do you know why Jesus told him that there is none good but God? Because Jesus was connecting for him what he had said about Jesus with the fact that only God is good. And this was an attempt to help the man see that he should be following Him because He is his Messiah and is good too because He is God. What Jesus taught this man had nothing to do with his not being good enough for God. This is shown by the fact that Jesus did not challenge his statement when he said he had kept all the commandments from his youth. Many Israelites kept the law blamelessly as Luke1:5,6 attest. But, instead, Jesus said he only lacked one thing, and that was that he had not yet begun to follow Him. So Jesus told him what the Old Covenant had always told Israelites. That for him that to have eternal life he must keep the commandments and follow Him.

Do you know how Jesus knew this man still lacked one thing? Because this man’s question showed that he did not believe Jesus was Messiah. Because he only thought of Jesus as a good teacher. This is why Jesus told him to sell all that he had and give it to the poor and follow Him. Because Jesus wanted him to see what it means to believe in Him. He wanted him to know that what he had in this life must not be more important to him than following Jesus. But, this man proved to himself that his possessions were more important because when he “heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.” This is why Jesus taught “He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it” in Mt.10:39. And that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.

But, Paul says in Eph.3:1-12 that he preached a message that had never been heard before. “A mystery hid from all ages past”. This means that this was a message that Jesus did not preach. Which is why Paul referred to it as “my gospel” in Rom.16:25. It was different because it was a message of salvation by grace through faith without works. So what Paul preached is that the entire Mosaic part of the covenant had been “abolished” because it was “nailed to the cross” with Jesus. We see this in Eph.2:15 and Col.2:13,14 and 2Cor.3:6-11. Not just the ceremonial parts as so many falsely teach who wrest Paul’s doctrine to their own destruction as Peter said in 2Peter3:16.

SERMONS | abingdonbible

It was for this reason that many Israelites rejected Paul as a heretic. Not just because he taught salvation comes through faith in Jesus. But, also because his doctrine said that works have nothing to do with salvation either. Not Jesus’ works or anyone else’s works as we see Paul saying in Gal.2:16. But, because Israelites had been taught salvation was by works + faith for centuries, it was now ingrained in every part of their being. This had become the “sin in my members” that Paul spoke of in Rom.7:23. There was no time that they ever thought about God without also having thoughts of the works of the law. And as an Israelite who had also been under the law, Paul knew this as well as anyone. This is why Paul said “For this, cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery. As I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ. Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit” in Eph.3:1-5. Even calling this gospel “my gospel” in Rom.16:25.

So we can see from this that Jesus did not preach the same gospel that Paul did. Because Jesus was preaching and confirming the Old Covenant to Israelites who were under the Old Covenant to show them how to live in the Old Covenant. That this could only be done by keeping the law and believing in Him. But, Paul taught that to remain under the part of the Old Covenant that was given through Moses would now under the New Covenant keep the Israelite from being able to be joined with Christ and bring forth fruit unto God. Because in Rom.7:1-4 Paul said that for Israelites to remain joined to the law and join themselves to Jesus at the same time makes them an “adulteress”. Saying that they must be dead to the law to be joined with Christ.

Groups like Hebrew Roots who reject Paul’s doctrine as heresy, and others who believe that salvation is still found in following the teachings of Jesus, have put themselves under the Old Covenant. A covenant that Jesus said includes works for eternal life. And for those who accept Paul as a true apostle, yet still believe they must keep the law because that is what Jesus taught, they wrest Paul’s doctrine to their own destruction. Some even falsely concluding that the law of God is written on the heart of the believer. When what Jeremiah was saying is that the Holy Spirit would lead the Israelite after they come to faith in Jesus making their old schoolmaster, the law, no longer necessary.

Can we conclude that the gospel Jesus taught and the gospel Paul taught are two different gospels? You bet. Jesus’ included works while Paul’s excluded works. And to confirm this all we need to see is what Jesus Himself said when He told the disciples why He had to leave in John16:7-13. Here is part of what Jesus said; “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you… I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…”

Here Jesus makes it clear that for the Holy Spirit to come He had to leave. Why? Because Jesus had to leave so that the Holy Spirit could teach the disciples, beginning with Paul, the things Jesus said they could not bear now. It was a different gospel. One that had every part of the law, what Paul referred to as “the ministration of death written on stones” in 2Cor.3, cut out of it. Taken away so that another covenant, a New Covenant, could be established as Heb.10:9 says.
So when Jesus said the law and the prophets were until John and since then the kingdom of God is preached. Jesus was not saying the law ended with John. But, only that he was the last of the prophets in that covenant. Which as we have seen in this message from the clear teaching of the scriptures is evident, because all those who were alive between John’s death and Jesus’ death were still in the Old Covenant. A covenant of faith + works for eternal life. A covenant that Paul says Jesus came to confirm with Israel. Also confirmed by Jesus when He taught them the way to have eternal life was to keep the commandments and follow Him. Just as all Israel had been taught for centuries since Moses.

But, as Paul said, the mystery that he preached was one where works have no place at all. Because it is entered into and lived by grace through faith without works. And now you know where the confusion comes from about whether we are to follow Jesus’ teaching or not. And if we are to keep the law or not. We are not to follow the teaching Jesus taught Israel before the cross. We are to follow Jesus’ teaching that comes by way of the Holy Spirit. Teaching that was the mystery given to Paul for the New Covenant church.

Have you believed in Jesus? Have you been born of the Spirit so you too can inherit eternal life? If you are reading this God is calling you. He loves you and wants you to know Him. Because knowing Him is eternal life.John17:3. So if you do not know Him please take the time right now to pray and confess Jesus as Lord of your life. And believe that He has raised from the dead. If you do believe in Him then pray something like this and you will be saved:

Dear Jesus, I believe you. Thank you for joining with me in death so that by conquering death by your resurrection I could join with you in life. Thank you that you raised from the dead so that I could raise from the dead too by trusting in, clinging to, and relying solely on you. Thank you for giving me a new spirit now Lord so that I can live with you in heaven forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.

By praying a prayer similar to this one and really meaning it from your heart you will be saved from death to life. From sin to righteousness. And from the wrath to peace with God. Now when you begin reading the Bible and believing what it plainly says it will begin to change the way you think and believe. Because when you trust in Jesus you leave the old life behind where you were only able to relate to and trust in what has been made. And now will be equipped for heaven because you are no longer only natural flesh and blood, but are made a spiritual being ready to inherit God’s spiritual kingdom called heaven. It is because of Jesus’ resurrection that He is the only WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE. Because only Jesus has broken through the wall of death that the flesh and blood natural body can never get through. Only by the new birth are we made ready to receive the spiritual body that can go through the wall of death as Jesus’ did first. God Bless!
