The brilliant Julian Assange . Julian Assange has taken a bow. The morning of June 24th saw his release from Belmarsh maximum security prison, where he had spent 1901 days. Following his release from custody at Stansted Airport in the afternoon, he boarded an aircraft and left the UK after the High Court in London granted him bail. This culminated in a worldwide effort that included grassroots organizers, advocates for press freedom, lawmakers, and political leaders from all corners of the globe.

A lengthy period of negotiations with the US Department of Justice ensued as a result, culminating in an agreement that remains officially unfinalized. Additional details will be shared promptly. After more than five years in a 2×3-meter cell, isolated 23 hours a day, Stella Assange, his wife, and their children, who have only known their dad from behind bars, will soon reunite with him.

In order to bring the powerful to justice, WikiLeaks released revolutionary stories detailing government corruption and violations of human rights. For these ideals and the people’s right to know, Julian paid a heavy price as editor-in-chief. We are grateful to everyone who supported us, fought alongside us, and stayed fully dedicated to the cause of his liberation as he made his way back to Australia. Freedom for Julian means freedom for all of us.

Assange, 52, is expected to be sentenced to time served (62 months in a Belmarsh prison, a high-security facility in South-East London) during a court appearance Wednesday in Saipan, in the US Northern Mariana Islands. This will allow him to avoid a potentially lengthy sentence in an American prison after spending over a decade holed up and imprisoned in London, primarily to avoid being sent to the US.

The Wall Street Journal stated in March that prosecutors and Assange had been in discussions to resolve the 2019 case, but that Assange’s wish to never set foot in the US was a sticking issue.

Of course, defendants usually have to show up in person if they want to enter a plea deal for a felony.

According to the Journal, Assange’s legal team had discussed the idea of a misdemeanor plea, which would allow him to enter his plea remotely.

According to those with knowledge, the Justice Department and Assange’s legal team struck a deal that would permit prosecutors to pursue a felony plea without forcing Assange to travel to suburban Virginia, the site of the initial case filing.

Despite Assange’s rise to prominence as a divisive voice calling for greater government transparency and his extensive legal woes, the two parties have been unable to reach a resolution to their extraordinary impasse, according to The FT.

The plea deal provides a tidy resolution to a political problem that the United States government was starting to have a lot of trouble with.

Australian lawmakers recently passed a resolution requesting permission for Julian Assange to return to his home country. This comes after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his hope that the United States might resolve the charges against Assange. Foreign Minister Olaf Scholz of Germany has also spoken out, stating that the British courts have no business extraditing Julian Assange to the United States. UN special rapporteur on torture Alice Jill Edwards stated in February that Assange should not stand trial in the United States due to his “depressive disorder” and the possibility of solitary incarceration.
